The Color Coded Campus

Race relations on campus at this time were on edge. Many BSA articles detailed tense interactions with white students, the University, (an institution that they identified as serving white, not black, interests), and a town that was predominantly hostile towards them. This cartoon demonstrates how many black students at the time of project 500 felt on campus.

At one point, the University set up a rumor center that people could call so they would not get scared on campus, most of these calls involved black unrest. Calls to the center included fears like "are there any Black Panthers in town?" and "are blacks from chicago with machine guns coming to Champaign?"
