"Negroes Go On Rampage"

Tribune Headline

Even before the 1968 school year began, Project 500 already got bad publicity. The Chicago Tribune headline pictured here reported the damage caused at the sit-in protest as a large-scale riot. When Chicago readers looked at the protest more closely, it bore few similarities to other riots, like the one at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago mere weeks earlier where many were injured. While this was one of the most inflammatory headlines, how journalists throughout the nation reported the event gave the impression that the SEOP students' demands on the University were unreasonable and they should be grateful just to be there.
